analogue or digital system ?

We are often asked which system a customer should go with, a digital or analogue one ? and the truth is that there is no real solution that suits all applications. For new installations it is not a decision driven by cable requirements as you have to run a wire for each of the options anyway, so it does not make any difference if you use 5 cores in a cable or just 2.

For Smaller Audio Installations from 1 to 30 flats a analogue system will give excellent speech quality and if you have a modular panel the size of the unit will not be an issue if it allows for double buttons in each module (such as the Videx 4000 series, as shown).
1) Low cost of handsets and system components
2) Established Technology
3) Easy fault finding
4) 4 / 5 cores required to each flat

For larger blocks 30 + flats a digital call panel will be the best way to go as the panel size begins to look a bit excessive, however not all digital systems are created the same.

Some systems require the handset to be learnt to the call button, which is ok until the call button module goes wrong, if you have to fit a new module you will then have to re-learn 5 or maybe 10 users to the new unit (gaining access to that number of flats may be a tricky and lengthy process)
Whilst others will require the use of a lap top computer or loan from the manufacturer of a programmer and software to set the system and change parameters delaying repair (it also ties you in to using the original installation company for servicing, regardless of their charges)
The Videx digital 2 wire system is easily programmed via the front panel and the audio handsets are set with a binary code (dip switch) allowing easy swap of handsets and testing. The flats can be called either by entering the flat number and pressing call or scrolling through the names via < & > buttons. The screen allows for company names or involved flat numbering to be set up and directed to a specific handset. Fault finding is easy as a faulty handset can be wired directly to the panel to test operation.

For houses or 1 / 2 flats the choice is really down to what style of unit you like, we would suggest that you stick to established brands with UK support, so typically Fermax, Entryphone Of London, Videx, Aiphone, Bitron, Elvox, BPT, Urmet etc (in no particular order) In larger blocks of flats (20+) then a digital system is really the only way to go.
If you select a analogue type system then fault finding will be easier, as the picture output can be tested with a hand held monitor and the speech can be tested with a standard 5 wire audio handset, with digital systems that is not possible as the digital signals are fed down 2 wires and cannot be tested or analysed on site (apart from the supply ie 24 or 30vdc)  it is generally a case of buying and swapping components, if still available £££ or swapping a known working unit from another flat (sometimes impractical)

1) The manufacturer stops supporting the product, later monitors not compatible etc. Particularly an issue if you are the only person with issues in a large block
2) Lots of systems have PCB mounted buttons, as the call buttons get a lot of use this is a typical failure point and as they form part of the front panel circuit board the whole front end would have to be replaced.
3) Replacement parts will be expensive and are not cross compatible with other brands.
4) For audio to video upgrades, building must be wired in twisted pair cable typically BT CW1308, Cat5 or Coaxial and alarm / BT or Cat5 and 2 x 1.0mm Some units require specific cables to be used which have correct CSA for power, video and audio signals, so best look into cable requirement carefully.
